Bristol’s Mountain Goat

Meet Matt Roberts

Matt is a professional mountaineer and mountain leader (ML) from Bristol, England. He has been a professional in the industry since 2022 and has been running trips ever since. Matt is also a martial artist, personal trainer and  fundraising athlete.

It all started at school when Matt completed the Ten Tors at school (both the 35-mile and 45-mile campaigns), quickly followed by the 3 Peaks of Yorkshire Challenge. He then started playing football at a reasonable level before switching his focus from sport to building a career. However it became apparent that he needed to be in the sporting world and the 9-5 life just wasn't for him so he switched back to sport and it was the right call.

In the years that followed he completed leisurely walks in places like the Brecons and Lake District whilst his coaching life and sporting endeavours as a Team GB Kickboxer took the driving seat. During this time Matt learned as much as he could about the world of mountaineering as a hobby in the background and would watch all the documentaries on the 8000ers!

In late 2021 the call of the mountains got so loud that Matt couldn't ignore it anymore and completed the Brecons Horseshoe and his first ascent of Snowdon (in the darkness) before tackling the winter National 3 Peaks in December of that year with his friend Sean Hershaw, It had become more than a hobby.

As 2022 came around the mission was clear, Matt completed 91 summits on various mountains during an astonishing year and completed the National 3 Peaks challenge (24H) twice, the Welsh 3000s challenge (24H), Snowdon Super 7 challenge (7 summits from each path & Crib Goch) and the Everest Basecamp Trek. Matt climbed Pietrosul Rodnei in Romania (2303m) and lead groups of friends and family to the tops of the UK's peaks, including 2 over the notorious ridge Crib Goch in Eryri National Park (Snowdonia).

In late 2022 Matt qualified as a mountain leader. Matt has completed a lot of his early challenges with his friend Jack Roberts (no relation) and regards him as his hiking partner. Matt completed the Welsh 3 Peaks twice in 2023. In April 2023 Matt successfully guided a stranded group on the top of Crib Goch while guiding his own clients across, before taking a separate client on the Welsh 3 Peaks south - North route but taking on a tough route over Crib Goch again. They took on 6 peaks and coined the challenge the Welsh 6 Peaks.
